SharePoint can augment existing ECM applications

Gartner analysis shows that organisations of all sizes are considering Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) because of the breadth of capabilities that it offers, and because Microsoft is already a strategic infrastructure provider.

Gartner points out that as SharePoint becomes embedded in an organisation, users naturally explore its suitability for a wider range of content management applications and its potential as a replacement for existing solutions. However, it cautions that those organisations requiring advanced content management capabilities and process-centric applications will need to augment SharePoint’s capabilities with partner offerings or by using it alongside an existing ECM system, rather than as a replacement for it.
