Samuel Brocklehurst

So, Samuel, Tell us a little bit about your role here?

I am a technical apprentice here, working in the Projects team, who ensure that all projects are started, progressed, and finished smoothly, to a good standard, and in good time. It’s not uncommon for me to also be seen working with operations, and at times, even the support team.

Tell me about your previous experience that you have brought to Perspicuity…

Perspicuity is the beginning of my career – I had no previous work experience before starting here nearly a year ago. I had a Level 3 Diploma in Computing and was trying to set myself up to get into the tech industry when I applied for my position here.

What does an average day look like?

I remember asking this question during the application process and being told “there’s no such thing” – and that’s the best description of an average day available. There are some tasks that I am likely to do every day, such as amending our projects database, for example. However, the overall aim for the day, and what I’ll be working on whenever I have a chance, is different almost every day.

What’s your favourite thing about your role?

Despite not being here long, being an apprentice has meant my position is not fixed and I have worked alongside several different teams doing very different things. From Power Platform to License migrations. And my role in the projects team means that even if I don’t actively deliver everything, I have gained a good understanding of all of our offerings.

This is my favourite thing about the role – I am never working with the same thing, I’m always learning and delivering something new.

Tell me about your career at Perspicuity:

My career at perspicuity has been a fairly short one – 11 months so far. In that time, I’ve gone from knowing almost nothing about Microsoft 365 to knowing an amount of information I couldn’t possibly list here! It has certainly changed a huge amount in my time here and will continue to as I continue to grow.

What’s been your biggest learning?

I’ve learnt so much in my time here it’s difficult to figure out which is biggest! A good one would be developing on the Power Platform – I have gained a good level of knowledge in PowerApps and PowerBI, and am learning Power Automate. I love building things – but I find the standard development process to be a massive headache sometimes, but with Power Platform that’s never a problem.

How would you describe what it’s like to work at Perspicuity?

I think the main thing about perspicuity I’ve noticed is how workable and tolerable it is. If something comes up in your personal life – you’re almost always allowed to adjust your work to fit it, when a lot of employers may expect you to do the opposite.

Another thing is mistakes and learning – It doesn’t matter if you make a mistake, you identify the mistake, how it was made, how to improve, and move on. And if you’re perhaps struggling with something and it’s taking longer than you’d expect – It’s not a big deal – flag it up with someone and try and get some help on getting the ball rolling, and it’s fine.

In all of these situations I’ve mentioned, as long as you talk to someone about it and come to an arrangement on how to deal with these circumstances, it always ends up being okay. It plays a massive part in creating an anxiety-free work environment where you’re never afraid to reach out.
